Capital of East Flanders

Belgium has a well-established reputation for being a land of chocolate, diamonds, and delectable waffles. However, for those willing to explore beyond Bruges and Antwerp, this city of 250,000 people offers a chance to sample Flemish culture at its authentic best. The historically inclined will enjoy Ghent's medieval landmarks, including Gravensteen ("Castle of the Count"); Toreken, the impressive gothic tower in the city's center; and Saint Bavo Cathedral. Don't spend all your money on admission fees, though; this town caters to pedestrian wanderers like few other places in Europe. It houses one of the world's largest auto-free zones, and the gilded architecture lining the Graslei canal area can be enjoyed day or night. Once you've finished wandering, stop into the Patershol district to sample some of Belgium's legendary white beers. Every summer, the ten-day Gentse Feesten music festival attracts more than a million revelers.

  • Nice city, especially recommended during the "Ghentse Feesten" - one of the biggest cultural and popular music festivals in Europe. It's in July and everybody is out on the streets. Nice!
